Angolan government privatises 45% of state company Angola Telecom
The government of Angola plans to sell 45% of the capital of Angola Telecom, a state company that has been authorised to operate as the country’s third mobile operator the Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technologies, José Carvalho da Rocha, said in Luanda.
The Minister stated that the company, which currently provides only fixed-line services and Internet access, will serve as a global provider of telecommunications and information technologies, offering mobile network, fixed-line, data, subscription satellite and other services.
José Carvalho da Rocha also announced the launch of an international public tender, “to take place soon,” to select a partner for the State in this consortium, saying that the tender specifications will be published within a month.
He added that the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technologies has already received “several” expressions of interest from foreign and domestic investors, but that the process, until the final choice of operator, “will not be completed in less than three months.”
Angola Telecom is a public telecommunications and multimedia company founded in 1992 after the merger of the state companies Enatel and Eptel, providing commercial voice and data services, but its results were successively negative.
In addition to Movicel and Unitel in mobile telecommunications, and Angola Telecom in the fixed network, until 27 February the Angolan government has an ongoing tender for the selection of a fourth operator for national coverage of the fixed, mobile and data networks and satellite subscription.
